SeoMoz hosts impressive MozCon 2011

by Niels on Monday, 8 August 2011

It’s been a week since returning from one of the most useful conferences I’ve ever attended. SeoMoz is a Seattle based company, who creates software as a service to help guide and measure success and competitive landscape in SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Very useful set of tools and methodologies. After having attended some other Internet marketing related events in the past, where I generally walked away disappointed by the lack of depth, the agenda for MozCon 2011 had me intrigued, so I signed up and attended.

Since this was my first MozCon, I have no idea how it compares to prior events – but this 2011 edition sure was a winning combination of knowledgeable speakers, who traversed various depths of the field from general principles to very specific approaches and some of their favorite tools. While the central theme was SEO, the agenda also touched upon this field’s natural neighbors from, SEM (Search Engine Marketing) to branding to working with social networks, which reminded that SEO is a component of a holistic marketing strategy, which can’t be successful in isolation.

While each speaker clearly was enthusiastic about their work, the presentations never went too far into motivational speaking fluffiness, but concentrated on practical things one can do, and why they make sense. There were useful numbers and analysis. And tools were mentioned. But there also was the realization that doing business on the web is still a quickly shifting environment where winning strategies can change in a heartbeat. Which is why I find it so intriguing and rewarding to participate in.

I don’t think I’ve been to a conference, that was this useful since attending the Netscape Developers conference in 1996, when the Internet was still in it’s infancy, and SEO hadn’t been invented yet. How time flies when you’re having fun!

Thanks to the SEOmoz team for planning, sequencing and hosting a great event and to all the speakers for their presentations. It was remarkably useful and enjoyable!

Analyzing SEO Efforts

July 14, 2011

Over the last little while I’ve been using two services which are similar, but not quite the same. And both can report on some of Google’s non-US search engines (like for example the Canadian version of Google). SEOmoz has a wealth of SEO related widgets and reports helping you to analyze your own site, follow [...]

Promising SEO Toolkit?

January 27, 2011

Just bumped into Linkdex, a very promising looking SEO (Search Engine Optimization) toolkit. However it’s early days and so far (judging by the sign-up page), it looks like they can only analyze US and UK Google results. Currently I’m doing most of my heavy duty work on Google Canada (google.ca) results, so US and UK [...]

Disable Google Analytics with Browser Plugin

May 25, 2010

With privacy (finally) becoming more of a public issue for the likes of Facebook and Google, it appears that Google is making it easier to opt out of some of it’s insatiable data slurping. This is partially bad news for web marketing, since it means that google analytics numbers may become less complete, depending on [...]
